South African landscape oil painting of a Childhood Memory from Louise Graham

Childhood Memory is a deeply nostalgic painting inspired by the memory of the Highveld that I remember from growing up — before mine heaps and development interrupted the horizon, when the open veld seemed to stretch forever.

It recalls weekends spent on farms as a town girl: riding horses, milking cows, playing in the hay, walking through long grass and experiencing the extraordinary freedom and stillness of the countryside.

The old eucalyptus and disappearing dirt road are not intended to represent one particular place. They belong instead to a remembered landscape — the Highveld as it exists in my memory.

A quieter place. An open place. A place where, as a child, it felt as though there was nothing standing in your way.
